Tanzania proudly calls itself “the land of Kilimanjaro”, the highest point of the African continent (19,340 ft./5,895 mt.), as well as the highest single standing mountain in the world.
This climb will take you through diverse and changing scenery of cultivated lowlands, misty rainforests, moor lands studded with giant lobelias, the rocky and barren lunar landscapes of the upper slopes and the permanent snow fields at the Kibo peak.
We recommend the quieter camping routes of Rongai, Shira and Lemosho that still retain a sense of unspoilt wilderness. The climbs can take from 6 to 9 days, depending on your time and budget.
These treks are organized by specialists and regulated by the park authorities. In the mountain it is essential to travel “in style”: good equipment, good food and a good crew –guides, porters and cook- who have been properly trained to take care of all your needs, who are paid a fair salary and treated with respect.
An alternative to Mt. Kilimanjaro is a shorter 4 days trek on Mt. Meru (14,979 ft./4,566 mt.), where the accommodation is in mountain huts with spectacular views of Mt. Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds. An armed ranger will escort you on this trek as the lower slopes of the mountain shelter a variety of wildlife.
