There are two very different parks to visit in this remote area of Tanzania. One of them is Mahale Mountains National Park on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, home to some of the last remaining wild chimpanzees in Africa. Besides tracking chimps, you can swim, sail and fish in the lake, as well as relax and enjoy one of the most exclusive and beautiful places of the country.
The other destination is Katavi National Park, remote, hard and wild, a true African safari, with just you and the wilderness of untouched landscape, only shared with an abundance of wildlife.
Days 1: From Arusha to Katavi by light aircraft (which could also pick you up from Serengeti N.P.).
Days 1 to 4: Days to enjoy the abundance of wildlife and pristine nature from the comfort of your camp. Katavi has the greatest concentration of crocodiles and hippopotamus of Tanzania and it’s lions and leopards have no shortage of prey: impala, eland, black legged topic, zebra and herds of up to 1,600 buffalo wandering the short grass plains.
Day 5: Flight to Mahale Mountains and transfer to the camp by boat.
Day 5 to 7: Relax on the beautiful shores of Lake Tanganyika, tracking chimps, swimming and sailing. Sometimes the chimps might even come down to the camps to track you down …
Day 8: Flight back to Arusha.
Katavi and Mahale Mountains can also be visited separately as an extension to your safari to other parts of Tanzania: Chada Katavi and Greystoke Mahale from Arusha and Katavi Wildlife Camp from Ruaha or Dar as salaam.
There is a new lodge on the shores of Lake Tanganyika that offers different activities: snorkelling, diving, fishing, exploring the area by quad bike and safaris to Katavi N.P. by car. This lodge can be reached by train from Dar es salaam.
