Safaris Southern Circuit

The outstanding Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park are the treasures of this circuit.
A completely different and exciting experience in a less visited area with incredible wildlife and pristine nature, to be discovered by open 4wd vehicles, walking in the bush escorted by armed rangers and by boat in the mighty Rufiji River.
We recommend traveling to this area by light aircraft and staying at one of the few camps inside the parks, for the best game viewing experience. The best season for large mammals and predators is during the dry months –June to November- and for bird watching, lush scenery and wild flowers, from December to March.

Southern Circuit: Classic safari itinerary

  • Day 1: Depart from Dar es salaam, Zanzibar or Arusha by light aircraft to the Selous Game Reserve. The vehicles from the camp would have cleared the airstrip for a safe landing and will be waiting to take you to the camp. Apart from its abundant wildlife, Selous has a rich variety of birdlife of more than 440 recorded species. The landscape varies from riverine forest to miombo woodland and short grass plains.
  • Days 1 to 3: You can discover the reserve from the comfort of your camp: game drives in open 4wd vehicles, boat trips in Rufiji River or walking safaris with an armed ranger.
  • Day 4: Another light aircraft flight will take you to Ruaha National Park. The landscape is very different from Selous: baobabs forests, rockly outcrops and wooded hills with a huge concentration of wildlife along the cascading Great Ruaha River.
  • Days 4 to 6: Your activity plan in Ruaha will be shared game drives in open 4wd vehicles and walking safaris with an armed ranger.
  • Day 7: Back to Dar es salaaam with connecting flights to Zanzibar, Mafia and Pemba.

Southern Circuit: More Options

Both Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park can be visited separately by light aircraft or by 4wd vehicle.

Ten days of safari traveling through rural Tanzania, visiting Mikumi and Ruaha National Parks and crossing the beautiful Uluhuru Mountains to reach the Selous Game Reserve. Trekking in Uzungwa Mountains is also possible in this itinerary.

For more adventurous travelers, a safari by car visiting the ruins of Kilwa, half way between Dar es Salaam and the Mozambiquean border, to continue to the Selous Game Reserve.
